NIACE is in the final stages of developing a resource pack aimed at practitioners and managers in family learning and mental health services who want to work in partnership to improve, set up or develop opportunities that promote access to family learning for adults experiencing mental health difficulties. We are hoping to showcase some examples of innovative work in this area and if you think what you are doing fits the bill, please get in touch with either Clare Meade, Project Officer: Family Learning, NIACE clare.meade@niace.org.uk or Rachel Spacey, Research Officer: NIACE rachel.spacey@niace.org.uk by the end of April 2008 for more information.
Freecycle Changing the World One Gift at a Time
Freecycle groups match people who have things they want to get rid of with people who can use them. Our goal is to keep usable items out of landfills. By using what we already have on this earth, we reduce consumerism, manufacture fewer goods, and lessen the impact on the earth. Another benefit of using Freecycle is that it encourages us to get rid of junk that we no longer need and promote community involvement in the process. Everything posted must be free, legal and appropriate for all ages. When you want to OFFER something - whether it's a chair, fax machine, piano or an old door, simply send an email to your group. Maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself? Post a WANTED message and a group member may just have what you're looking for. Alert the group with a follow-up RECEIVED email. After that it is up to the giver to decide who receives the gift from the responses only they receive and to set up a collection time, and finally post an item TAKEN message. There are different groups for different areas, click here to visit the Chippenham group.

Do You Need Firm Evidence about Poverty and Social Exclusion in Your Area?
The New Policy Institute (NPI) are experts in analysing and presenting information about disability, income, employment, pay rates, education, ethnicity, and housing. Drawing on official statistics, NPI have become a strong influence on the Government's work on poverty and social exclusion. They would now like to use their knowledge to support the work of the local third sector. Together with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, they would like to find out about the potential demand (from local third sector groups) for local pieces of analysis. Twenty groups that complete the questionnaire and are willing to further help, will be provided with a short analytical report (as a way of saying thankyou). The hope is that the report will be a valuable tool to help that group tackle poverty and/or exclusion. To help establish the level of demand please answer these dozen quick questions by Friday, 25 April 2008: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=xt9fbcn6Yg7YcpgylSh2uw_3d_3d To find out more about NPI please visit their website: http://www.poverty.org.uk/
Social Networking Tips Tailored for Charities
A new book will give charity fundraisers the practical tools to tap into social networking opportunities on the web. People to People Fundraising: Social Networking and Web 2.0 for Charities uses hands-on techniques and case studies to explain how non-profit organisations have used the internet to encourage large numbers of people to support a charity or cause. The book reveals how to use MySpace and Second Life to influence social change, how to influence single-gift web donors to become regular givers and the power of celebrity in building communities. The book will be launched at a seminar by its editor, Ted Hart, founder of the ePhilanthropy Foundation, and Steve Bridger, former Oxfam campaigner and social media consultant. Howard Lake, founder of online charity resource UK Fundraising, said: “It’s a timely, thoughtful guide to the urgent importance of social media to non-profits from leading practitioners around the world.” Details of the launch are available at online.

ITV Programme to Focus on Major Philanthropists
ITV is to broadcast a programme about charity donations and the super rich in advance of this year's Sunday Times Rich List. Britain's Rich List Give It Away, which will be broadcast on 24 April, features Dragons' Den businessman Duncan Bannatyne interviewing fellow multi-millionaires about how much they give to causes. Jamie Oliver, Kelly Osbourne, David James and Sir Tom Hunter are among those interviewed. "Philanthropy has crept up the agenda, and we thought it was the right time to ask the richest people in Britain what makes them give and whether they give enough," said Jo Clinton-Davis, controller of popular factual programmes at ITV. Bannatyne has recently opened a trust with the Charities Aid Foundation. "We felt he was the perfect person to shed some light on this sensitive subject," said Clinton-Davis.
