Extra £65m released for not-for-profit organisations in April 08. Futurebuilders England, the government-backed investment fund for the third sector, is gearing up to open its doors next month to organisations working across all areas of public service delivery. Offering loans-based investment packages, Futurebuilders provides flexible finance to organisations that are delivering public services or want to start contracting with public bodies, such as local authorities, primary care trusts or learning and skills councils. Established in 2004, the Futurebuilders Fund was originally only open to groups working in crime, community cohesion, children and young people, education and learning, and health and social care. From April 2008 it will extend its support to organisations working across all areas of public service delivery, including sport, recreation and leisure, environmental projects, waste and recycling, legal aid, and the arts. Loans are offered at a standard rate of 6% and are often combined with grants and professional support to help build capacity for generating income and winning contracts. To register your interest before the fund opens, or to find out more about how loan finance can help your organisation achieve sustainability, visit www.futurebuilders-england.org.uk or call 0191 261 5200.

'Too technical.' 'I’m just not interested.' 'That’s your job.' 'Waste of time and money!' ...Just a few comments some trustees make about ICT!
ICT Governance – How to better engage trustees. So what can you do to get your trustees on board? How can you get your management committee to get involved with one of the most fundamental aspects of your organisation? Firstly, you’ll never sell ‘technology’ to a technophobe so don’t waste your time trying. Secondly, it’s not worth telling trustees how wonderful ICT could be if their combined experiences are dozens of projects which took twice as long as planned, cost far more than budgeted and never actually delivered what they promised. A lot of ICT projects are badly planned and never work – for very good reasons. Thirdly, stop thinking about the ICT and start thinking about the governance. Introduce the concept of ICT risk management. If policies are their thing then that’s a good place to start. Make ICT a strategic issue rather than a technical or cost one. Fourthly, sell the impact. What’s the return on investment of doing something and the return on investment of not doing it? Sure, ICT costs money (often cold hard cash which some might feel is better spent of salaries) but what are the costs of not doing it. Poor staff morale, frustration with key tasks taking longer. Ineffective communications, missed opportunities and a higher burden of administration. How does this translate into the number of homeless people you help, the amount of advice you can give (and the times of day you can give it) or simply the quality of support your organisation can offer?
