Third Sector Review: Final Report Published

The final report from the Third Sector Review, the largest consultation ever undertaken with the sector, was published on Tuesday 24th July. We believe this demonstrates a significant shift in the Government’s approach to the voluntary and community sector and shows a deeper understanding of the sector in the context of wider civil society, rather than simply focussing on public services. The report backs a number of NCVO proposals including a Third Sector Research Centre and a skills strategy for the sector’s workforce. It contains a number of major announcements including a £50m local endowment fund, £117m investment in youth volunteering, £83m funding for Capacitybuilders and £10m investment in community anchor organisations. The Campaigning Effectiveness programme has done a briefing on the review looking more specifically at the implications for campaigners.  Whilst welcoming the government’s commitment to reviewing the legal and regulatory campaigning environment, government could make explicit their understanding that the sector should assert its independence effectively. Further information and a full summary are available on NCVO's website.

Involvement to Impact Awards 2007

The Involvement to Impact Awards showcase and recognise the high quality work that is being done to involve patients and the public in NHS decision making and service development. The focus of these awards is to demonstrate how NHS staff and organisations have worked with patients and the public as equal partners and how this involvement has impacted health service planning, design and evaluation of new and existing services. This year we are focusing the awards on PPI in England.  In the future we hope to expand this to include the whole of the UK and international entrants. We welcome entries from all NHS, voluntary network and social care organisations working together to develop health services in a way that impacts on how they are tailored to the needs of patients and the public. The closing date for entries is 31 August and the winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony at the Involvement to Impact conference held by the NHS Centre for Involvement in November.  For more information about the conference please click here. To enter the awards, you will need to either register here.

Equality Matters - A Good Practice Guide for Small to Medium Sized Voluntary or Community Sector Organisations

'BIG is pleased to announce the arrival of ‘Equality Matters – a good practice guide for small to medium sized voluntary or community sector organisations'. The guide is designed to help applicants think about equality issues and incorporate them into the planning of their projects, whether they are applying to BIG (or another funder) for a grant. It also sets out the equality standards BIG expects from grant-holders. The production of this guide is part of BIG’s drive to promote equality and maximise opportunities for people to take part in the projects we fund. The guide, which is currently available for download on our website, has been produced with input from external stakeholders and will be reviewed in light of user feedback and then formally launched this autumn, when it will be published in hard copy format.' Follow the link for the guide: http://www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/equality_matters.pdf.
