Phil Hope is New Minister for the Third Sector

Phil Hope, MP for Corby and East Northamptonshire, is the replacement for Ed Miliband as minister for the third sector in the Cabinet Office.

Aged 52, he was elected in 1997 and has been minister for skills at the Department for Education and Skills for the last two years. He was a youth policy adviser for the NCVO before entering Parliament. “I am greatly excited by the new role,” said Hope. “The third sector plays a critical role alongside the public and private sectors to build economic success, create social justice and develop stronger communities. “Having worked in the third sector for many years before entering Parliament and chaired the all party parliamentary group for the voluntary sector when first elected, I hope I can bring first hand experience to the job of promoting voluntary and community groups and creating successful social enterprises.” Hope’s appointment follows the promotion of Ed Miliband to the Cabinet as minister for the Cabinet Office and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. Miliband will remain in overall charge of policies for the voluntary sector.

A Healthier England from 1st July

On July 1st 2007, England introduced a new law to make virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England smokefree. A smokefree England ensures a healthier environment, so everyone can socialise, relax, travel, shop and work free from secondhand smoke. Employers, managers and those in charge of smokefree premises and vehicles will need to: *display 'no-smoking' signs in smokefree premises and vehicles, * take reasonable steps to ensure that staff, customers/members and visitors are aware that premises and vehicles are legally required to be smokefree, * remove any existing indoor smoking rooms, and, * ensure that no one smokes in smokefree premises or vehicles. Visit the website to find out more about your responsibilities: www.smokefreeengland.co.uk.

FREE - Social Enterprise Half-day Workshop and One-to-One Surgeries - 'Moving from Grants to Trade'

Social Enterprise Link is delivering a series of workshops and surgeries across the south west region that we think might be of interest to some of the people with whom you are in contact or working. Many projects working in communities will be considering how to continue their services as current funding comes to an end.  Such projects have enormous potential to develop into social enterprise businesses.  Developing enterprise with a focus on trade can be a way of sustaining the valuable work already being achieved in local projects. Our series of workshops and surgeries are designed to explore how this could happen. Click here for further information.
